原因：古罗马时期战火纷纷，为了保证充足的兵力，国王下令单身青年不允许结婚全部从军。一对情侣得知国王的命令之后，来到一个天主教教堂，请求神父Valentine能够帮助他们主持婚礼。Valentine本来就对国王的政策很不满意，所以很快就答应了他们，悄悄地为他们举行了婚礼。
后来，找Valentine的情侣越来越多，消息越传越远，就传到了国王的耳朵里。国王得知Valentine这么无视他的命令，就下令抓捕Valentine，并在公元269年2月14日将Valentine处决了。后来那些Valentine帮助过的情侣为了纪念他，就将2月14日定为了情人节。
