Interview with Mr. Deng Tietao, Master of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), about the Experience of Fighting Against SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome)
前言：如果不是2020年的新冠肺炎疫情，也许这段有关谈及中医治疗非典的采访视频会一直尘封下去，不被人知。现将这段视频整理成文并做出英文翻译，以利于更好地广泛传播，同时更要表达为中医事业做出巨大贡献的国医大师邓铁涛先生的致敬和缅怀。
Preface: If without the epidemic of novel coronavirus pneumonia in 2020 (COVID-19) , this interview video about TCM treatment for SARS will maybe remain dusty and stay unknown. Now this video is written up and translated into English in favor of widespread dissemination. Furthermore, it is to express the tribute and memory for Mr. Deng Tietao, a master of TCM who has made great contribution to the TCM.

邓：2003年非典，我被问到：“非典什么时候会走？”我说6月，果然6月以后没有再生新的病例。
Mr. Deng Tietao: In 2003, I was asked: “When will the SARS disappear” My answer was: “It will be in June”. As a matter of fact, there were really no new cases of SARS by that June.
记者：为什么？
Journalist: Why
邓：因为非典在中医看来是湿邪，6月份那个时候，天气干燥了，湿就化了，事实证明果然以后就没有了。中医有一门学科叫做“运气学说”，“运气学说”就是讲今年是什么年，这个年会怎么样？
Mr. Deng Tietao: From the point of view of TCM, SARS is a kind of pathogenic factor of dampness. When the weather is relatively dry in June, then the dampness will be gone, the virus will disappear accordingly. In fact, it turned out the truth that there were no more cases happened by that June of 2003. There is a discipline of TCM which is named as “Wuyun Liuqi Theory”. This theory discusses a certain year is what kind of year and predicts what will happen along with the natural environment changes in that specific year.
美国30年前有一个发明叫做“时间医学”，哈伯格，美国的一个医生，被称为“时间医学之父”，但是他读了成都一个助教用英文翻译的《内经》中有关时间医学的内容，他看了，很惊讶，他就亲自跑来中国，找理论的“祖父”（源头）来了。
Franz Halberg, an American doctor, who is regarded as the father of Chronobiology in the world. The word Chronobiology is invented by him around 30 years ago, but he came to be surprised when he happened to read an article which was translated by one teaching assistant in Chengdu, China. The article talked about “Wuyun Liuqi Theory” in the book of Yellow Emperor’s Canon of Medicine. Finally, He decided to come to China immediately to look for this very beginning founder of the Chronobiology theory.
航天部有一个叫余生初的院士，他就研究航天员，比如航天员今天能不能去，头一天晚上就要做一个睡眠实验。睡眠实验就是用中医的那个“子午流注”，什么时辰，什么经络走到哪里。
By that time, Mr. Yu Shengchu, an Academician from the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace of China, is also an expert in the field of Chinese traditional Chronobiology. He made experiments on sleeping quality for astronauts the night before deciding whether one certain astronaut could go out for training the next day. The experiment design was based on the rule of “Midnight-noon and Ebb-flow Doctrine” in TCM, talking about the meridian circulation and location within our human body every two hours.
如果（晚上）11点到1点，你睡觉不正常，那你明天就不能飞。所以，他写了个文章，他就运用了“子午流注”，这也就是时间医学。
For example, astronauts would not be allowed to fly today if their sleeping quality was abnormal between 23 to 1 o’clock last night. And then he published an article built up the principle of “Midnight-noonand Ebb-flow Doctrine”, actually that is also Chronobiology.
所以，中医东西太深奥了，太丰富了，（有些人）不那么容易懂它，就说它（中医）是乱说一通。
Therefore, TCM is too profound and too esoteric to be fully understood by the public. That is why you could always hear some negative comments on TCM, such as nonsense or completely untrue.
中医，没有微生物学，所以最初治疗非典不让中医参加。
At the beginning of SARS epidemic, TCM didn’t have the opportunity to provide medical treatment for patients because TCM has not the theory about the microbiology in the view of western medical science.
（后来中医介入），我们广州中医药大学第一附属医院，治疗这个非典是4个零。零死亡，没有1个死的，香港死了17个，我们一个都没有死。如果说你没有死人，是不是你把死的转走了？但是第2个零是零转院，没有转院。第3个零是没有人感染，因为我们喝中药，全院喝中药，没有人感染。我后来再给他加一个零，零后遗症，没有一个人有股骨头坏死，所以4个零。这不骄傲吗？全世界的冠军呀，但是没有人宣传啊。
Later, TCM involved in treating SARS patients in the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. As a result, the TCM team there made a wonderful achievement, a miraculous healing record in the history of fighting against SARS: zero death, zero transfer, zero infection and zero sequela. We are so proud of it because this result was definitely the champion of the world, but unfortunately, this has not been publicized widely.
Zero death: there was no death in that hospital, compared with 17 patients lost their lives in Hong Kong due to SARS.
Zero transfer: there was no transfer from that hospital to another for sure.
Zero infection: there was no medical staff infected by SARS in that hospital since they all took Chinese herbs daily to prevent.
Zero sequela: there was no one tortured by ONFH (osteonecrosis of femoral head) after getting recovery from SARS.
这就是用中医的理论指导去处理的，这个理论的根源就是《黄帝内经》，最简单的解释我们讲，这个是病邪，从口鼻而入。所以，中医治疗就要把它赶走，要驱逐湿气。
We treated our patients under the guidance of TCM basic theory. The root of the theory is from Yellow Emperor’s Canon of Medicine. To put it simple, we say that SARS is a disease caused by exogenous pathogenic factors which can invade the human body from mouth and nose. Therefore, TCM treatment will focus on driving pathogenic factors away from the body depending on the different syndromes what the whole body indicates.
那西医呢，它主要是用那个激素，激素在中医看来是引邪入里的。中医讲病邪，要分清是属热还是湿，还是有其他的，然后用药要把它清除掉，把它赶出去，比如中医有个治疗方法叫做“发表”。
As to the treatment of western medicine for SARS, it mainly uses the hormone to kill the microorganism, which can induce evil to enter the interior of body according to TCM theory. When TCM talks about adisease, it is necessary to distinguish whether the pathogenic factor belongs to the evil of heat or dampness, or something else. And then, TCM choose the proper medicine for each individual patient to rebalance the disordered situation and drive out the evil out of body. For example, TCM has a treatment method called “Exterior-releasing Therapy” which has the actions of inducing diaphoresis, expelling pathogenic factors from the skin and muscle.
而那个激素引邪入里，把那个病邪引到骨头去了，人不死，也留个后遗症了。
But the hormone has certain negative effects on patients, as a result, the patient survives but has to face certain sequela, especially on bone, such as ONFH.
中医是个理论实践医学，不是实验医学；当时那么短时间就死了那么多人了，是来不及做实验的。
TCM is not based on experiments in the laboratory. On the contrary, TCM is theoretical and practical medicine, which accumulates its experience in reality based on the theory and set up its further theory through treating persons one generation after generation. By the way, there was actually no enough time to do complicated experiments in the laboratory by that time due to more and more patients would dead in a very short time in 2003.
我们是在理论的指导下面，去实践，所以中医方法论是实践论，认识，实践，再认识，再实践，不断的深入。所以，中医5000年，把它延续下来，你说多么丰富。
TCM has formed its own characteristic theories throughout the medical practice lasting for over five thousand years, so the theory of TCM is broad and profound. We can say that the methodology of TCM is the theory of practice and its unique feature is built upon constantly practicing and understanding through different treatments.
瘟疫、鼠疫，外国人没有办法的。广东历史上生过鼠疫，有史料记载，当时就是用中药治疗鼠疫的。
Until today, there is still no effective treatment using western medicine for such as plague and pestilence. However, the pestilence happened in Guangzhou was conquered by TCM in the past. It was documented in some historical literature as well.
